Eagles Use Hot Bats to Torch Marshall, 18-12

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Herd and Eagles had mirror first innings as both stranded runners on first and second via a single and drawn walk.
- In the Marshall second, they struck the board first with a two-RBI single from Jackson Golden to make it 2-0 quickly.
- The Eagles would threaten in the bottom half after a first-pitch single from Bennett Edwards, followed by a walk, put two on with none away. The next two batters were a failed bunt attempt and strikeout to stop the inning's momentum.
- In the bottom of the third, the Eagles started the inning off right with a solo homer from James McCoy, his fifth of the season. After Sean White walked, Bryson Trammell put himself and White in scoring position with a double off the Blue Monster.
- After a wild pitch would eventually score one, an RBI-single from Jack Myers up the middle tied the contest at three all.
- Southern threatened and forced a pitching change in the fourth as back-to-back singles from Grant Jordan and Max Prozny put runners on the corners. A batter later, McCoy doubled to give Southern the lead and complete three-fourths of the cycle in his first trio of ABs.
- Still in the Eagle fourth, White grounded out deep in the infield to plate another, making it 5-3.
- Marshall threatened with consecutive two-out single in the fifth, but would strand their fourth and fifth runners on the afternoon with a flyout to end the frame.
- The bottom of the fifth started with a bang, as Myers laced a triple off the right-center wall before Frank Wells brought him in off a sac-fly.
- However, the Herd exploded for seven runs in their sixth after a leadoff double from Oliver Service started what would become a six hit inning for Marshall. This included a throwing error on a sac-bunt and a three-run homer from Havrilla, his second of the afternoon, to take back the lead, 10-6.
- The Eagles would not back down, though. Five hits, including RBIs for Trammell, Myers, Wells, Prozny and a Marshall error that scored two gave Southern back the 12-10 lead en route to their six-run sixth inning.
- Southern threatened with their bats after the stretch, using two walks and two hit batters with the bases loaded to increase their lead to four.
- After a leadoff single and hit batter, Southern would go back to the bullpen and bring in Jayden White. After entering, he would force two flyouts that, despite giving Marshall a run back, would close out what could have been another explosive inning from the Herd.
- Georgia Southern added some insurance in their eighth, as three Eagles were plunked to set up singles for Edwards, Prozny and McCoy to put their advantage at 18-11.
- Despite a solo homer for the road by Marshall's Golden, White struck out two Herd batters to end the contest and give Southern their first Sun Belt victory of the year.
NOTES:
- McCoy went a perfect 5-5 at the dish and was just a triple away from the cycle after his first three ABs. He would go for eight hits on the weekend and now has 16 of them in his last seven contests.
- Prozny would also have himself a six-hit weekend after going 3-6 at the dish with four RBIs on the afternoon. Both him and McCoy would go for foru RBIs, and would be just the second and third times, respectively, they would do so in 2026.
- All but one Eagle would have a base knock on the day, with five of them going for multiple hits.
- Jansen Kenty picked up his first collegiate win after allowing just one run and a hit in his 1.2 innings of work, including two Ks in his outing to boot.
- Jayden White was rewarded with the save on the mound after getting the Eagles out of a jam in the eighth with multiple runners on. He also only allowed a run and a hit while striking out two, both in the ninth, in his two full innings of work.
- The Eagles were plunked by a pitch six times on the afternoon. it would be the most since April 29th, 2023 when they were hit nine times in a win over ULM.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles start their five-game week with a contest at Charleston Southern on Tuesday (March 24th), followed by a visit to the College of Charleston the following evening. Both games are set to begin at 6 PM in Charleston.
