HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the first, a leadoff double from Beverley set up an RBI-single for Bass to make it 1-0 early.
- After a scoreless Eagle first, State capitalized by their nine-spot batters reaching aboard before two batters later, before Maginnis slammed a two-run shot off the top of the scoreboard to make it 3-0.
- Southern battled back in the bottom of the third as after a leadoff hit by pitch, Nico Senese fought to a 3-2 count before mashing a 377-foot homer to left-center to cut the deficit to just one run, 3-2.
- The Eagles tied things up at three just an inning later as Sean White's leadoff double fired up Eagle Nation. He later scored after a groundout and sac-fly from Jack Myers leveled the contest.
- In the top of the fifth, an Eagle error caused a Panthers to score after their leadoff double to make it 4-3. An inning later, they added on another with back-to-back two-out doubles from Beverley and Maginnis to make it 5-3.
- The Eagles stormed back in the later innings, however. In the bottom of the seventh, Edwards reached on a fielder's choice before James McCoy laced a double to the gap. Edwards, not satisfied with staying at third, missed the shown stop sign and just missed the tag to cut the deficit to one.
- In the Southern eighth with one-away, Sammy Leis came in to pinch hit to get the matchup advantage. On a full count pitch, he drilled a ball to dead center off the batter's eye to get not only his first long ball of the season, but also tied the game up at five.
- After Will Robbins threw his third straight scoreless inning, the Eagles drew two straight walks in the bottom of the ninth.
- With two aboard, Brady Christman found the first pitch he saw and smoked a grounder through the middle infield, scoring Edwards to give Southern the walk-off victory on Senior Day, 6-5.
NOTES:
- Christman's singles not only gave him the walkoff, but extended his hitting streak to now 22 games. With it, he now has the fifth longest streak in program history as just a true freshman.
- Leis' homer in the eighth was his first of the season and just the second of his career, both coming from the pinch hit spot as his first career long ball came last season at South Alabama.
- Will Robbins delivered some senior magic on the mound. In his three full innings, he allowed just three hits and one free base while striking out two Panthers.
- Alex Mason also had a solid start on the rubber as well. He would go six full frames and only allowed two earned runs on the afternoon with three Ks.
- Grant Jordan's triple was just the second extra-base hit of the season for him. The first came just yesterday on his double against the Panthers in Game 2.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles host their final home contest of 2026 as the College of Charleston comes to town for Statesboro Appreciation Night. First pitch against the Cougars is set for 6 PM on Tuesday (May 12th).
