STATESBORO – Georgia Southern head coach Rodney Hennon announced the addition of Connor Owings to the Eagles' coaching staff as the program's assistant coach overseeing the team's hitters on Thursday, July 16.
"I am very excited about Connor Owings joining our staff," Hennon said. "Connor's primary responsibilities will be coaching our hitters and outfielders while also assisting with recruiting. He is a proven winner on and off the field. Connor has a great mind for the game, a relentless work ethic, and a commitment to excellence. All the qualities that made him a very successful player have allowed him to transition into being a terrific coach. He will be a huge asset to our program and be impactful to the growth and development of our players on and off the field."
Owings arrives to Georgia Southern after serving as the Assistant Director of Player Development and Recruiting at Coastal Carolina, where he was part of one of the nation's premier programs.
During his time on staff, the Chanticleers advanced to the 2025 Men's College World Series final before returning to postseason play in 2026 with an appearance in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Owings enjoyed one of the most decorated playing careers in Coastal Carolina history. A native of Gilbert, South Carolina, he was a three-time All-Big South selection from 2014-16 and started every game of his collegiate career.
As a junior in 2016, Owings was named the Big South Player of the Year after batting .352 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs while helping lead the Chanticleers to the program's first NCAA National Championship. His standout season earned First-Team All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), in addition to All-Region recognition and finalist status for the Greg Olson Award.
Owings was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 34th round of the 2016 MLB Draft and went on to build a professional career that spanned nearly a decade across the United States, Australia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Most recently, he played professionally with Ponce in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League and Margarita in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.
According to Baseball-Reference, Owings has appeared in 842 professional games, compiling 814 hits, 118 doubles, 81 home runs and 480 runs scored while batting .271.
One of the defining moments of Owings' career came after missing the entire 2018 season following a kidney transplant. He returned to professional baseball in 2019, appearing in 95 games with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League, demonstrating the perseverance and resilience that have defined both his playing and coaching careers.
Owings was inducted into Coastal Carolina Athletics' Sasser Hall of Fame in 2021 as both an individual and a member of the Chanticleers' 2016 national championship team. He was also named to the Big South Baseball All-Decade Team (2010-19).
At Georgia Southern, Owings will serve as the Eagles' hitting coach, overseeing the development of the team's hitters while contributing to all aspects of the program, including recruiting, player development and daily operations.
