HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Bears exploded for eight runs in their top half of the first off of just four hits, the second most runs scored against the Eagles in the first this season. Mercer was helped with six Eagle walks and a three-run homer to center by the catcher LaPointe.
- The next six half-innings went down without a sound, as no runs would come across until the bottom of the fourth.
- To lead off that frame, Brady Christman crushed a ball 412 feet to centerfield to put the Eagles on the board, 8-1, for his 12th homer of the season.
- Mercer used back-to-back doubles in the fifth by Graziano and Shepherd to cancel out Southern's run. 9-1.
- In Southern's fifth, the Eagles made it just a 9-7 contest by plating six runs. With one away, a Grant Jordan double and Bennett Edwards single put runners on the corners.
- After a strikeout, the Eagles put together a two-out rally with a Christman RBI-single, walk and a two-RBI single from Sean White to make it 9-5.
- Jonathan Jaime singled up the middle to bring home another before two passed balls scored White and Jaime to tighten the gap to just 9-7.
- Jax Lewis and Will Robbins combined for 6.1 innings of only allowing a singular Bear to score to go into the stretch at still a two-run deficit.
- After the stretch, the Eagles stranded two on after a fielder's choice and Jaime's third hit of the night with a strikeout to keep it a two-run game.
- With two away in the Bears' eighth, a double from Baughcum put a runner in scoring position. The following batter saw the Bears' capitalize off an Eagle error, giving them an insurance run, making it 10-7.
- In the top of the ninth, Craig Kalkbrenner finished his outing against his former team with three strikeouts in the frame and was just one pitch away from an immaculate inning.
- However, the Eagles went down 1-2-3 in the final two innings to fall just short of an epic comeback.
NOTES:
- Jaime's three-hit night was just the second time doing so in his career. The other instance came just last week on April 28th against Charleston Southern.
- Christman now has a dozen home runs on the season with his solo shot in the fourth. He now is second in program history by a freshman in season homers.
- A trio of Eagles in Robbins, Lewis and Kalkbrenner all combined for 8.1 innings of just allowing one earned run across after a disastrous opening frame. Both Lewis and Kalkbrenner struck out four while Robbins was the only Eagle of the night to not allow a run across during his tenure on the rubber.
UP NEXT:
