HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both starting pitchers dominated the first two innings, as both Bartkoski and Carter DeGondea picked up two strikeouts through the first two frames.
- In the top of the third, the Panthers used a one-out walk, followed by three consecutive singles, for State to score three in the frame Thankfully, a double play retired the side early to limit the damage.
- In the bottom of the same inning, Southern attempted to make noise as after Bennett Edwards picked up the first hit of the game for the Eagles, two straight walks loaded the bags with two away. However, a lazy fly ball ended the inning and kept the three-run deficit.
- The Eagles were still held scoreless through five innings, as Bartkoski struck out six Eagles and only allowed the lone single midway through.
- After going to the bullpen, the Panthers added another run on the first pitch of the inning. Beverley took the first pitch to left-center field to quickly make it 4-0.
- In the top of the seventh, the Panthers had a runner in scoring position with just one away. However, a lineout to Senese at third caught Carlson off guard, who was thrown out at second.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Senese led off the frame by getting plunked before advancing to second the very next batter. Later in the frame with two away, Brady Christman delivered a clutch RBI single through the right side of the infield to bring him home and see the Eagles avoid the shutout, now 4-1.
- After a quick eighth, the Panthers added on an insurance run in their top of the ninth after a leadoff double and single from Griffth to close out the contest, 5-1.
NOTES:
- Christmas's RBI single in the seventh made him just the first Eagle since 2005 to eclipse a 20-game hitting streak, with Jason Hurst being the last to do so.
- Both Carter DeGondea and Brady Pendley combined to both allow just two earned runs each in their outings this afternoon. DeGondea gave up two in his five full innings with four strikeouts, while the senior punched out three in his four full frames of work.
