STATESBORO – Georgia Southern Baseball completed its first series sweep of 2019 with an 11-6 thrashing of Arkansas State on Sunday morning. The Eagles scored six runs in the second inning to blow the game open, but it was a
Steven Curry solo home run to start the bottom of the first that set the tone. The home run was Curry's first in Statesboro and led the Eagles to their fourth-straight double-digit scoring game. The Eagles will slide up to Kennesaw State on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game against the Owls.
SCORING INNINGS
TOP 1ST | GS 0 – ASU 1 | A leadoff walk in the first came back to bite the Eagles in the first when the second batter of the game hit a double down the left field line to score the game's first run from first base, handing the Red Wolves a 1-0 lead.
BOT 1ST | GS 2 – ASU 1 | That advantage only lasted three pitches in the first as
Steven Curry belted his first J.I. Clements Stadium home run with a solo job to left.
Jason Swan put the Eagles on top later in the inning with a single to center to score
Tyler Martin from second.
BOT 2ND | GS 8 – ASU 1 | The Eagles got six runs in the second inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and getting four hits. RBI singles from
Blake Evans,
Mason McWhorter and
Noah Ledford brought in the first four runs, while a bases loaded HBP to
Austin Thompson and a
Mason Miller ground out scored two more to stake the Eagles to an 8-1 lead.
TOP 3RD | GS 8 – ASU 4 | Arkansas State answered immediately with three unearned runs off two hits and an Eagle error.
TOP 4TH | GS 8 – ASU 6 | A leadoff walk and a double ended
Tyler Owens' day in the fourth inning, as A-State scored two more in the fourth to cut the Eagle lead down to just two runs in the middle innings.
BOT 5TH | GS 10 – ASU 6 | Christian Avant ended a run of seven-straight Eagle batters retired in the fifth inning by hitting his first home run of the season. Later in the inning after a pair of walks,
Mason McWhorter drove in Miller from second with a single to left to make it a 10-6 lead.
BOT 8TH | GS 11 – ASU 6 | The good guys added an insurance run in the eighth inning when McWhorter singled up the middle and moved up on a wild pitch. Swan's RBI single up the middle plated the junior and made it a five run lead heading to the final inning.
