Anne Kurzweil and Mary Phillips Smith battle at No. 1 Doubles
Women’s Tennis Falls To Bethune-Cookman

Statesboro, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team (9-4) fell to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Saturday morning from the Wallis Tennis Complex. After securing the crucial doubles point, the Eagles were not able to earn 3 additional points in singles to clinch the match. Ultimately, the Wildcats earned the victory by a score of 4-1 as the match was only played to clinch.
"Bethune-Cookman put up a great fight today, and unfortunately, we weren't able to play our preferred game-styles during singles play," said Head Coach Michele Stanford. "There were many lessons to be learned today, and we are looking forward to putting them into action against USC-Upstate tomorrow."
Bethune-Cookman struck first in doubles as the No. 1 pairing of Mina Matsuba and Maria Sablina defeated Mary Phillips Smith and Anne Kurzweil 8-5. The Eagles, however, answered at the No. 2 position when Francisca Norregaard and Daria Vasekina combined to take down Alejandra Vidal and Chinatsu Kajiwara 8-5.
The doubles point came down the No. 3 tandem of Jordana Klein and Giulia Riepe who earned the victory over Maria Garoz-Mareno and Gaby Chinchilla 8-7 (6).
Up 1-0 after doubles, the Eagles would score no more, as the Wildcats got 4 straight set victories to claim the match 4-1.
Klein fell to Matsuba at No. 1 3-6, 0-6, Smith was defeated by Sablina 0-6, 2-6 and Vasekina was bounced by Vidal 4-6, 2-6. In addition, Norregaard was setback by Musina 4-6, 3-6.
The remaining 2 matches went unfinished, however, Anne Kurzweil was up a set on her opponent, Kajiwara 6-4, 4-4 and Riepe was also up in her match with Garoz-Mareno 7-5, 1-2.
The Eagles will remain at home for a Sunday match-up against USC-Upstate. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. from the Wallis Tennis Complex. Prior to the match, the Eagles will honor lone senior, Jordana Klein, in a senior day celebration beginning at 9:40 a.m.
