Short-handed lineup battles the Monarchs tough on Friday; Eagles wrap up regular season next Saturday at Troy
NORFOLK, Va. - A short-handed Georgia Southern women's tennis team battled No. 59 Old Dominion tough on Friday, but fell to the Monarchs by a 4-1 score in Norfolk, Va.
Old Dominion improves to 9-4 on the season with the victory, while Georgia Southern moves to 8-11. The Eagles will wrap up the regular season next on Saturday, April 18, taking on Troy at 11 a.m. in Troy, Ala.
The doubles point was tightly contested between the two teams. The host Monarchs picked up a win at No. 1, while Franzi Heinemann and Nanaka Kijima teamed to take a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Mackenzie Leopold and Lisen Rinman battled back from a 5-2 deficit at No. 2 doubles to tie the match at 5-all, but ODU would pick up the 7-5 win and the doubles point.
Playing with only five singles players, the Eagles conceded a point at No. 6 singles, then ODU took a straight-set win at No. 4 singles. Evelyn Warkentin continued her impressive singles Spring, notching a 7-5, 6-0 win over Victoria Matasova at No. 1 singles. The Monarchs then clinched the match with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles.
