Statesboro, Ga. – In their final home match of the season, the Georgia Southern Women's Tennis Team (10-4) defeated the University of South Carolina-Upstate Spartans 4-1 from the Wallis Tennis Complex Sunday. Prior to the match, the Eagles honored their lone senior Jordana Klein for her contributions to the program over the past 4 seasons.
After clinching the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, the Eagles went on to earn singles wins from Mary Phillips Smith, Giulia Riepe and Francisca Norregaard to solidify the team win.
Prior to the match, it was decided that doubles would be played to completion, however, singles would be played to clinch. At No. 1 doubles, Smith and Anne Kurzweil were setback by Isabel Von Stryk and Anna Zoske 3-8, but the Eagles would still head in to singles matches up 1-0 in the match.
Smith continued the winning ways when she was victorious over Ruppert at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0. Then the Spartans got on the board when Klein fell at No. 1 to Von Stryk 2-6, 0-6 to move the team score to 2-1 in favor of the Eagles.
Vasekina got the job done in the No. 4 position when she bounced Roell 7-5, 6-0, and Riepe got the match-winner when she defeated Zoske at the No. 3 slot 6-1, 6-3.
