HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Eagles started off well defensively as after giving up a leadoff single, Southern turned a 6-4-3 double play before Will Holder struck Piasecki out looking on strikes.
- Brady Christman reached on an error to start the Eagles second, and a stolen base and wild pitch later saw him standing aboard third. However, two strikeouts and a sharp liner later saw Southern unable to capitalize to keep the score at zeroes.
- Troy woke up their bats in the third, slapping five hits, including a leadoff triple to centerfield, to score two runs. Thankfully, a second double play turned by the Eagles limited the damage allowed.
- The Trojans added on one more with a solo homer from Meier that went over the Blue Monster to make it 3-0.
- The Trojans' Stubbs went for a streak of five consecutive Ks en route to holding the Eagles hitless through five innings played.
- Stubbs ended his night after seven full innings of work, collecting a dozen Ks on the night.
- Southern's relievers had a stellar showing as both Craig Kalkbrenner and Brady Pendley threw five scoreless innings to set up for a dramatic ninth frame.
- In the top of the ninth, a fired up Pendley, despite giving up a hit and a walk, struck out the side. This included a K with two runners on to give the Eagles life.
- With one away in the final frame, Brady Christman slammed a homer over the Blue Monster to cut it to just a one-run deficit. The very next pitch, which was a new Trojan arm, was another jack from Bennett Edwards to right field, evening the contest at three all.
- With two away, Jack Myers kept the inning alive with a single through the middle. Coach Rodney Hennon made the call to send in the senior cpatin Jonatahn Jaime in the nine hole to pinch hit and deliver. Which is exactly what he did.
- On an 0-1 count, Jaime sliced a liner down the left field line, just staying fair as Myers chugged all the way from first to score on a double that wound up in the alley. The senior who only had one hit on 16 ABs delivered the biggest one of the season for Southern to win it, 4-3.
NOTES:
- The last walk-off winner by an Eagle was Senese's two-RBI single against App State here in Statesboro on March 22nd of 2025.
- Both Christman and Edwards had two times tonight where they delivered back-to-back base hits, with the first instance coming back in the seventh with two singles.
- Kalkbrenner and Pendley combined for arguably the best bullpen performance of the season thus far, combining for five scoreless innings and only allowed two hit while striking out four, three of which came from the arm of Pendley.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles look to take their first Sun Belt series win tomorrow afternoon at J.I. with first pitch on Great Outdoors Day is set for 2 PM.
