HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A leadoff double from Troy's Piaseck set up the Trojans well in the first, but three of the next four retired from Carter DeGondea stranded two early to keep them off the board.
- A single from James McCoy and two walks in the opening three batters loaded the bases with none away in the first.
- Bryson Trammell converted with runners on with his two-RBI single through the right side of the infield to plate two. Although grounding into a double play later on in the first, another run would come home to make it 3-0 in the first for Southern.
- Carter DeGondea struck out two Trojans in the third for a 1-2-3 inning.
- The Eagles exploded in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs. It started with Sean White reaching on an error before Brady Christman drove two home to make it 5-0.
- The Eagles continued to stay hot offensively as a Nico Senese double and Jack Myers single both gave them RBIs on the afternoon to extend the Southern lead to 7-0 after three.
- DeGondea was dominant on the afternoon, tossing five full innings of scoreless ball while allowing one hit and striking out seven Trojans.
- The Eagles' offense was stagnant in the middle innings, but got one back in the sixth. Prozny singled before James McCoy doubled in the gap to give Southern their eighth run of the game.
- Jax Lewis entered in relief for DeGondea and didn't miss a beat from where he left off. The sophomore got back in form with his three shutout frames, also allowing just one hit and added on a strikeout.
- In the Eagle eighth, singles by Prozny and Sean White (RBI), along with a walk, loaded the bases with none away and a nine-run lead. During Christman's at-bat later in the inning, a wild pitch thrown allowed McCoy to score, completing the shutout victory in run-rule fashion.
NOTES:
- The Eagles' last shutout victory came exactly a year ago on the day with their 20-0 shutout victory at Georgia State last season. The last Eagle shutout win at J.I. was a 16-0 win over Old Dominion on April 2nd, 2023.
- Bryson Trammell looked back in form with a three-hit outing and was just one of two Eagles with multiple RBIs on the afternoon.
- DeGondea's seven Ks on the afternoon were his most as an Eagle, and was just one off of his career-high of eight he set at State Fair CC in 2024.
- Lewis also had a dominant relief outing to compliment DeGondea. His last outing of three or more innings while not allowing a run was his collegiate debut against Western Carolina on February 14th, 2025, where he threw three scoreless frames against the Catamounts.
- Nico Senese doubled twice on the afternoon and was the first time in his career to reach aboard second with two extra-base hits.
