STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team split on Saturday against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, dominating in game one, 13-1, but falling in game two, 9-4.
GAME ONE
The Eagles (10-11, 2-2 SBC) took to the board in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI-groundout, scoring
Josh Tate and taking the early lead. The bottom of the second inning saw
Cade Parker knock his first hit of the season, an RBI-single that scored
Sean White and doubled the lead. The bottom of the fourth inning saw the Eagles break the game open with Parker's second hit of the game, a grand slam to left field, scoring
Daniel Haab,
JD Kaiser, and White, going up 6-0.
Kaiser added to the lead in the home half of the fifth inning with a 450 foot home run down the right field line, scoring White and going up 8-0 before the Golden Eagles (14-8, 3-1 SBC) got on the board with a solo homer. The Eagles were able to end the game early in the bottom of the eighth inning, first with a Tate RBI-single to score Haab, then
Jarrett Brown calling game with the second grand slam of the day, securing the 13-1 run-rule victory for Georgia Southern.
Thomas Higgins earned his second victory of the season after his first quality start of the year, pitching for 6.1 innings with only one run on four hits and seven strikeouts. USM's Niko Mazza took his first loss of the year.
GAME TWO
Southern Miss (15-8, 4-1 SBC) took the early lead in the top of the third inning when an RBI-double plated a runner, taking the 1-0 lead. Georgia Southern (10-12, 2-3 SBC) tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Kaiser, scoring Schmidt. The Eagles then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Parker scored on a double play.
Georgia Southern doubled its run total and extended the lead to 4-1 in the home half of the sixth inning when Kaiser hit his third homer in as many games, scoring White and taking the 4-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles scored eight runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to take the contest from Georgia Southern.
USM's Colby Allen took his third win of the season while
Joey White took his first loss of the season.
