Georgia Southern wins series against Southern Miss for the first time in program history
STATESBORO - Ty Fisher pitched the fifth complete game in his career, his third at Georgia Southern and his second against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, to earn Georgia Southern a huge 3-1 victory over Southern Miss to clinch the Sun Belt series.
Southern Miss (15-9, 4-2 SBC) took to the board in the top of the fourth inning when Slade Wilks hit a solo homer to right-center field, breaking the scoreless tie. This would be the only run Fisher gave up on the afternoon.
Georgia Southern (11-12, 3-3 SBC) came back to tie the game at one-all in the home half of the fourth inning on an RBI-groundout, scoring Jarrett Brown.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Cade Parker was able to reach base when the Golden Eagles second baseman dropped a pop-fly in the infield. Since the drop happened with two outs, Luke Odden continued to circle the bases, reaching home on the drop and giving the Eagles a late 2-1 lead.
Southern was able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Kent Schmidt sent a double to the gap in left-center to score Brown a second time in the game, posting a 3-1 lead after eight frames.
Fisher returned to the bump in the top of the ninth inning to close out the game, and induced flyouts to the outfield on the first two batters. After walking the third batter he faced, he induced a final flyout to the final batter, securing the 3-1 victory and the series victory.
Fisher's final stat-line had him give up four hits and only a single earned run. He walked one while sitting down seven. In nine innings, he threw 112 pitches.
Fisher took his fourth victory of the season for his efforts, while Kros Sivley took his third loss of the season, as he was the pitched that saw Odden score on the fielding error.
