Southern Miss flies east for the first time in series history
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team is set to host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles for a Sun Belt Conference series starting on Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium. This series serves as the conference home opener for Georgia Southern.
Georgia Southern comes into the series with a 9-11 overall record. Most recently, the Eagles battled College of Charleston on Tuesday night, where the Cougars pulled away from the Eagles late. Georgia Southern also brings a 1-2 conference record into the match-up after opening conference play at Old Dominion, where the Monarchs took two of three from Southern. The Golden Eagles bring a 14-7 overall record into the series after most recently falling 8-3 to Ole Miss in neutral-site action. Southern Miss is one of two SBC teams with a 3-0 conference record after sweeping Marshall in Hattiesburg, Miss., to open conference play.
Southern Miss holds the lead in the all-time series between the two teams 6-1. After the first meeting in the 2007 Wiregrass Invitational in Dothan, Ala., the next six meetings were all at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss won the first six meetings, but Georgia Southern was able to get on the board against the Golden Eagles in the final game of the series last season, when Sam Blancato's two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning broke an 8-8 tie and gave the Eagles its first victory against the Golden Eagles.
The Georgia Southern Athletics Marketing team will present two promotions this weekend, beginning with Sandlot Night on Friday night. The first 500 fans at J.I. Clements Stadium will receive "The Sandlot"-themed t-shirts at the game. Saturday's promotion is Fastballs and Fitness, where fans can reieve a free wellness kit at the gate prior to the game. Sunday does not feature any promotions, just classic baseball.
Georgia Southern will reconfigure its rotation this weekend, with RHP Thomas Higgins starting on Friday night and LHP Ty Fisher starting on Sunday afternoon. Saturday's starter is yet to be named. Southern Miss will start RHP Niko Mazza on Friday, RHP Billy Oldham on Saturday, and RHP Will Armistead on Sunday.
