MIDWEEK PREVIEW: Eagles Double Dip in Midweek Games

Road trip continues against Charleston on Tuesday, ends at South Carolina on Wednesday

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team prepares for a five-game week, starting with two midweek contests on April 2 and April 3. The Eagles will first take on the College of Charleston Cougars on Tuesday before pivoting to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday.

Southern is 14-13 overall after taking two games in a Sun Belt Conference series against the Arkansas State Red Wolves. The Eagles leaned on some excellent pitching performances to keep the Red Wolves offense quiet, using a combined four pitchers in the first two games. Saturday's victory represented the third run-rule victory for Georgia Southern in the previous seven games.

Georgia Southern eyes a series victory against the College of Charleston Cougars on Tuesday afternoon at Patriot's Point. The Eagles and Cougars are tied a one-all in the season series after the Cougars took the first game in Statesboro, but Georgia Southern rebounded with a 13-3 run-rule victory against the Cougars last Tuesday.

The Cougars come into the contest with a 17-9 record after sweeping a Coastal Athletic Association series against Stony Brook over the weekend. The Cougars used a pair of double-digit scoring efforts to come out victorious on Friday and Saturday, with Sunday's affair finishing at a closer score of 6-2.

The series against CofC is at 39-37 in favor of the Eagles. Georgia Southern is 13-20 all-time against the Cougars in Charleston, falling in run-rule fashion last year when the Eagles visited Patriot's Point.

On Wednesday, the Eagles will visit the No. 22 South Carolina Gamecocks, who the Eagles have not met since the 2011 Columbia Regional, where the Gamecocks narrowly defeated the Eagles, 2-1.

Georgia Southern is 38-83 all-time against the Gamecocks, with its last victory coming in 1996. The two teams have only played three times since the turn of the millennium, with two of the three meetings needing extra innings to be decided.

South Carolina comes in with a 21-7 record after dropping two games this previous weekend to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama won a narrow 4-3 game on Thursday before taking down the Gamecocks on Friday by a score of 13-6. South Carolina was able to salvage the finale with a 9-8 victory.

Freshman righty Porter Buursema will see his first collegiate action on Tuesday, getting the start from Patriot's Point. Wednesday's starter to to be determined.
