BOONE, NC – The Georgia Southern baseball team took a 5-2 win against the App State Mountaineers at Smith Stadium on Saturday. The victory clinched the series for the Eagles and gave them a 2-0 start to Sun Belt play.
The pitchers put on a clinic for the first five innings of play, as no one was able to drive in any runs for the first two-thirds of the game. The Eagles would tag Mountaineers starter Xander Hamilton for six hits to Georgia Southern
Ty Fisher's two hits allowed, but the game remained scoreless until the sixth.
In the top of the sixth inning,
Noah Searcy hit an RBI single into center field, which brought in
Christian Avant to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Eagles would continue the scoring in the top of the seventh inning, when an RBI double by Jesse Sherill would plate
Jarrett Brown, pushing the Eagles' lead to 2-0.
App State would cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the seventh inning, when a single to left field drove in a runner and scored an unearned run for the Mountaineers.
The top of the eighth saw the Eagles load the bases and walk two Eagles home for a 4-1 lead. App State was forced to make a pitching change, but the Mountaineer reliever walked
Jesse Sherrill, giving the Eagles a 5-1 lead after the top of the eighth inning.
Jake Martin hurled the final two innings, allowing just one hit to help seal the 5-2 win for the Eagles. Georgia Southern improves to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt.
