Eagles Drop Series Finale, 11-6
3/20/2022 5:53:00 PM | Baseball
The Eagles were the first to get on the board with a sacrifice bunt by Christian Avant, who brought home Jesse Sherrill to give GS a quick 1-0 lead. However, the Eagles would only hold the lead until the bottom of the second inning, where a Phillip Cole home run tied up the score at 1-1. App State would add onto their lead in the same inning, as a stolen base by Alex Aguila and an Eagle error that allowed RJ Johnson to reach base set up a two-RBI double by Austin St. Laurent to give App State a 3-1 lead after two.
The Eagles would cut the deficit to one with a Noah Ledford RBI single, but App would respond in the bottom of the four with a Johnson sacrifice fly, giving the Mountaineers a 5-2 lead.
Parker Biederer would hit a sacrifice fly of his own to left field, bringing in Austin Thompson to cut the lead to 5-3, and an RBI single by Noah Searcy would plate Avant, setting up a thin 5-4 late for the Mountaineers. However, a two-run homer by St. Laurent would push the score to 7-4 in favor of the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers would use the bottom of the eighth to add on extra runs, with one coming from a sacrifice fly to center field, one coming from a single through the left side, and two coming from a single up the middle. The Eagles would score two final runs, one from an Avant single down the left field line to score Sherrill and one from a Ledford RBI single back to the pitcher, but the game would ultimately end as a 11-6 loss for the Eagles.
