Spartanburg, Sc. – The Eagles had a solid opening day at the Wofford Invitational as they won the majority of their matches. The flighted tournament features both doubles and singles action, with no two Georgia Southern student-athletes in the same flight.
"We started off the morning with a big doubles win in the top flight against our fellow conference school, Arkansas State," commented Head Coach Michele Stanford. "As a whole, the team played very steady tennis throughout singles play. I was very impressed with everyone's focus and determination. All of their hard work over the past couple of months definitely showed in competition today."
In "Gold Singles" Jordana Klein dispatched Greer Ransom 7-6(1), 6-0 and will play Rokia Sacko in the quarterfinal round. Teammate Mary Phillips Smith advances to the quarterfinals of "Black Singles" on a bye and will challenge Shannon Bettiol of Western Carolina University.
Anne Kurzweil defeated Demi Henschel 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the "Wofford Singles" flight and will take on University of North Carolina Asheville's Christina Boissevain. In "College Singles" Daria Vasekina handled Sharlee Deshmukh 6-0, 6-2 to advance and will challenge Mafalda Lhorca in the quarterfinals.
The "Terrier Singles" flight witnessed Lauren Mueller defeat Emily Erickson 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. She will battle Antonia Conze in the next round of matches.
Francisca Norregaard was defeated by Catherine White 2-6, 3-6 but will play Mariana Silva in a backdraw match. Teammate Giulia Riepe was forced to withdraw from the tournament with an injury.
The tandem of Kurzweil/Smith advanced in "Gold Doubles" as they beat Heeps-Eriksen/Pisani 8-3. They will challenge Karas/Reidy of Wofford in the quarterfinals. "Kurzweil and Smith played very aggressive doubles, and they did a great job finding their opponents weakness early on and attacking it throughout the entire match," concluded Stanford.
In Gray Doubles, the team of Klein/Mueller handled the duo of Scott/Peyton 8-0 and look ahead to battle McLinden/Messalles of Western Carolina University in the quarterfinals.
