Georgia Southern wraps up the weekend with a Sunday match at Mercer
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis notched its second straight win with a 4-1 victory over visiting Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles moved to 4-5 on the season with the victory, while Charleston Southern falls to 2-6. Georgia Southern is back in action on Sunday, traveling to Mercer to take on the Bears in a 1:30 p.m. contest in Macon.
Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in a tightly contested doubles point. The duo of Franzi Heinemann and Nanaka Kijima won at No. 3 doubles by a 6-4 score, then after Charleston Southern took the No. 2 doubles match, Mackenzie Leopold and Evelyn Warkentin secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
Charleston Southern evened the match with a straight set win at No. 1 singles, but the Eagles went back in front as Amelie Rosadoro and Nanaka Kijima each picked up straight set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Heinemann then clinched the victory for the Eagles with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
"Today we played a very solid match," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Doubles was really strong from each of our teams. Mac and Evy faced a very strong team and came through with the clutch win!
"In singles, Nana and Ame did a great job picking up their straight set wins. Franzi had to fight exceptionally hard against a very strong opponent to win in three tough sets. We are on the road tomorrow as we face a really strong Mercer squad and we are excited for another chance to compete!"
