Strong singles play leads the Eagles back after doubles deficit
MACON, Ga. - Georgia Southern women's tennis stretched its current win streak to three with Sunday's 4-1 win over in-state rival Mercer at the Copelan Tennis Complex in Macon.
The Eagles improve to 5-5 on the season with the third straight win, while Mercer falls to 7-5. Georgia Southern will dip back into Sun Belt Conference play next, taking on Southern Miss on Saturday, March 7, in Hattiesburg, Miss. at 11 a.m. ET.
Mercer earned a 1-0 lead in the match as their top two doubles teams collected wins, giving the Bears the advantage heading into singles play.
But the Eagles responded strongly in singles, taking all six first sets. Evelyn Warkentin got Georgia Southern on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, then Nanaka Kijima quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Mackenzie Leopold had to go three sets to pick up her win at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, then Franzi Heinemann clinched the victory with her 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Angelina Mihajlovic and Amelie Rosadoro both had leads in their matches when play concluded.
"I was extremely impressed today by the squad," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Dropping the doubles point actually provided a ton of motivation for the team. The ladies came out and picked up all first sets in singles. I believe we would have picked up all six singles matches, against what is, what I believe to be, the strongest Mercer team I've seen.
"Evy turned around a tough match yesterday into a very convincing win at #1. And Nana has been really proving to be such a tough fighter for us all year. Mac and Franzi came through in a great way right when their team needed them. I felt as if Ame and Angelina were also just a few shots away from taking all six spots. We will rest a bit and make the long trip to Mississippi and Alabama next weekend."
