Georgia Southern notches its second home win of the season
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis defeated South Carolina State, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles (3-5) avenged a loss last season to the Bulldogs (0-3) with the victory and also improved to 2-1 at home this season. Georgia Southern's next scheduled action is against Charleston Southern on Saturday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m. at Wallis. Sunday's match against Kennesaw State has been postponed due to expected rain and a makeup date will be announced later.
Georgia Southern used dominant doubles performance from Angelina Mihajlovic and Lisen Rinman at No. 1 doubles and Mackenzie Leopold and Evelyn Warkentin at No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point. Both duos won by 6-1 scores.
The Eagles then clinched the victory with three straight-set singles wins. Warkentin downed Katerina Marsalkova, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, then Amelie Rosadoro notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over Danica Nedeljkovic at No. 5 singles. Leopold then clinched the victory with her 6-1, 6-3 win over Iriela Rajaobelina at No. 4 singles.
"Today the team came out really focused and determined to play solid tennis," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "From the beginning, I could tell all three teams had a ton of confidence right from the start of doubles. I was happy with how together Mac and Evy played at #2, and Lisen and Angelina played great from start to finish at #1. In singles I was particularly impressed with how focused and confident Mac was competing today. Very strong performance by both Amelie and Evy winning in straight sets as well. I also liked seeing Nana on the verge of closing out her match but we secured the 4th point just prior. We have two weeks off before our next match and we will use this time to keep focused on further development on both the physical and mental part of our games."
