HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Southern stranded one in scoring position to open up the series, Texas State used one swing by Manny Salas to score two on a homer to dead center.
- It would be an instant response from the Eagles, however, as Brady Christman led off the second with an opposite field solo homer that went 370 feet to make it 2-1.
- The next six batters combined were retired before Southern led off the third with back-to-back singles from Frank Wells and Max Prozny. However, the Bobcats would keep them off the scoreboard for the time being.
- The Christman/Bennett Edwards combo continued with their singles to start the fourth to put runners on the corner as Nico Senese eventually brought in the tying run off a sac-fly, but were unable to fully take the lead back.
- The Bobcats mirrored the Eagles in their fourth with back-to-back leadoff singles and eventually advanced both runners. Unfortunately, a two-out wild pitch got one to come across for their 3-2 lead.
- The two squads continued to score as James McCoy's leadoff single and two walks loaded the bases with one away. Edwards collected an RBI on the night by grounding out, allowing the tying run to come home.
- The Bobcats kept responding as a one-out triple from Galloway led to Salas' second homer of the night to make it a two-run deficit for the Eagles once again, 5-3.
- Both squads stayed quiet in the sixth, but a hit by pitch followed by Bryson Trammell's single to send Sean White to third eventually led to Christman's second RBI of the night off a sac-fly to make it just 5-4.
- Despite two quick outs in the Eagles' eight, newly subbed in Mason Gazaway reached second on a double thanks to miscommunication from the Texas State defense. Just a batter later to McCoy's double down the right line to tie it up for the second time, 5-5.
- However, Texas State, just like they have all night, responded immediately yet again. With one away in the bottom of the eighth, the Bobcats' Stewart would play hero and crush a 450-foot solo homer to center to make it 6-5. They added on more insurance runs before going into the ninth with their fourth homer of the night, this time a two-run shot, to increase their lead to 8-5.
NOTES:
- Bennett Edwards extended his hit streak to eleven, which is now the longest by an Eagles freshman since Austin Thompson's eleven in 2018.
- Despite the loss, Ethan Garrett matched his career high of five Ks after coming out of the bullpen, including punching out four of the first nine batters he faced.
- After a cold stretch, McCoy found his bat again with a 3-5 night at the plate that included his 13th double of the season, now good to tie for the second most in the Sun Belt.
- Brady Christman had just his third multi-hit game of the year with his 2-3 evening and has gotten a base knock in now nine of his last ten games.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles and Bobcats return tomorrow (April 3rd) for a doubleheader to close the series. First pitch is set for 3 PM ET with the series finale scheduled for an hour after Game 1's conclusion.
