Georgia Southern notches its first Sun Belt win of the season
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis picked up its first Sun Belt Conference win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Arkansas State on Friday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles (7-7, 1-3 SBC) also gave head coach Sean McCaffrey his 123rd career head coaching victory at Georgia Southern, tying him with Dr. George Shriver for the all-time lead for Georgia Southern women's tennis. Arkansas State falls to 7-7 overall and 0-1 in the league with the loss.
Georgia Southern collected the doubles point for an all-important early lead in the match. Angelina Mihajlovic and Evelyn Warkentin combined for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, then after the Red Wolves won at No. 3 doubles, Mackenzie Leopold and Lisen Rinman clinched the point with a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
Singles saw each team claim three first sets. The Red Wolves would take a 2-1 lead in the match with straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but the Eagles would bounce back to take a 3-2 lead on Amelie Rosadoro's 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Franzi Heinemann's 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
The other two matches went to third sets, and Evelyn Warkentin clinched the victory for the Eagles with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
"Today was a very solid team effort," Coach McCaffrey said. "I have to admit that watching the men's match that finished right before we took the court really inspired our squad with how hard they fought and how much heart they showed. We did the same in order to win today's match. When we played them last year we all left with such a bitter taste in our mouths and today the team absolutely rose to the challenge."
"Doubles was extremely tight and we've been trying to find our best tandems," McCaffrey said. "Today it proved to really hit it right. Evy and Angelina were nearly unstoppable at #1. Very methodical and effective in their execution. Mac and Lisen stepped up big after being down 5-3 in their match - coming all the way back to take the match and the doubles point in a tiebreak, that they controlled from start to finish. In singles getting straight set wins from Franzi and Ame proved to be key. Angelina dug deep to force a third set after dropping the first, and leading with a break lead in the third. Angelina was out insurance if we needed it, and we didn't as Evy stepped up and played lights out as she won her match at #1 in three. It was a great team effort and gives us some added momentum as we get ready to make our west to Texas and Louisiana."
