Tampa, Fla. — The Georgia Southern baseball team (0-7, 0-0 Sun Belt) fell in a 4-3 contest to South Florida (7-1, 0-0 AAC) on Sunday afternoon (February 22nd).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Eagles shut down the Bulls in the first two innings via the double play. In the first, it was a strikeout and throwdown by Bennett Edwards to catch a runner at second. In the second, a line drive caught at the hot corner by Nico Senese caught a Bull off guard and was thrown out at first.
- The bats stayed quiet on both ends until the fourth, when Sean White hit a solo shot off the scoreboard, his first of the season.
- In the Bulls' fifth, starting pitcher Will Holder found himself in two separate 3-1 counts, but was able to force popouts in both ABs.
- In the seventh, a Senese leadoff walk and an Edwards double put two in scoring position with none retired.
- Grant Jordan would add an insurance run with his RBI-groundout to make it 2-0. However, Edwards would be thrown out at home the following at bat.
- After stretch time, back-to-back one out hits would prompt Will Robbins to take the mound for the Eagles.
- An RBI-groundout, followed by an RBI-single from Trippel would tie back up the ball game.
- In the eighth, a one-out walk and hit batter saw John Davis come in to pinch run. A great read by Davis on a wild pitch sent him to third.
- The ensuing batter saw Senese grab an RBI off a groundout to first, giving Southern the lead without recording a hit.
- The Bulls responded with a two-out double, but a groundout would strand another for the home team.
- The Bulls used three hits, ended by a sac-fly from USF's Green for a walk-off win.
- Will Holder had a great start, going 6.1 innings and only allowing two runs, all of which coming in the seventh as runners he was responsible for.
- Holder threw six scoreless to start the game, collecting two Ks and only throwing 73 pitches.
- The Eagles return back home for a Tuesday (February 24th) midweek against Kennesaw State. First pitch at J.I. for Bark at the Park is set for 6:30 PM.
