Eagles Complete Doubleheader Wins Over Texas State, 13-3 and 8-7

Statesboro, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (27-24, 13-13 SBC) defeated Texas State (24-26, 12-14 SBC) twice on a Friday doubleheader (May 9th), by scores of 13-3 and 8-7.

In a shortened game one, the Bobcats would actually homer on just the third pitch of the game to take a 1-0 lead. But, it would be very short-lived. Sean White would deliver his first of many runs on the day with a ground ball through the left side to score Josh TaTe, who was aborad third. In the next inning, two walks and a single woud load the bases for Tate, and this time, he delivered. Tate sent a shot directly centerfield for his twelfth homer of the season, four RBIS, and gave his team a 5-1 lead.

The next inning, White would play copycat and drill a ball deep down the left line that barely hooked the foul pole for another home run for the Eagles. Although Texas State would counter with a long ball of their own the next inning, White's bat would catch fire as with the bases loaded, he blasted a triple that hit off the blue monster in right, clearing the bases. His five RBI game would essentially close the door in game one, making it 9-2.

The Eagles would score four more in the fifth off of five hits, including a JP Herrholz two-run homer that sailed over the monster, to seal their victory. On the mound, Kade Grundy would get his seventh win of the year by allowing just three runs in his six innings of work, tossing 103 pitches. Jax Lewis would come in to slam the door in the seventh, preventing any extra innings.

After Senior Day festivities, game two got underway. This time, it would finally be the Eagles to take the early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning with patient at-bats and capitalizing off Bobat errors. However, the very next half inning, Texas State would use three consecutive hits of their own to nod up the contest at three. They then would go on to load the bases in the third, but thankfull for the Eagles would just score one run to take the lead.

Again though, Sean White would take charge. On an 0-2, two-out count, White would mash a ball to dead center for his sixth RBI of the day, and tying up the contest once again at four. In the bottom of the fifth, a wild pitch from the Bobcats would give the Eagles the lead for good, with Nico Senese adding on insurance with his two-RBI single to make it 7-4.A needed insurance run would come in the seventh from a Cade Parker homer to right field for Southern's fourth long ball of the day.

In the eighth, a walk and hit batter from Jacob Phillips would eventually see athree-run homer for the Bobcats to make it 8-7 late. However, Phillips had a career day. Not including the homer, he would go 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just three hits and a career-high nine strikeouts. This number is also the most by an Eagle pitcher this season. Joey White would enter and close the door on the Bobcats, including forcing a double play in the ninth to put them on the ropes. The win would also mark a 10-4 record for Southern in one-run contests.

The bats were on fire for the games, including a 5-8 day for White with his seven RBIs and a homer. Tate would go 4-6 himself with the 4 RBIs on his grand slam with Senese going 4-7 with two RBIs aof his own.

The series finale is now set for tomorrow (May 10th) at 10 AM at J.I. Clements Stadium for the home finale for the Eagles.
