Statesboro, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (19-13, 6-6 SBC) defeated the Dolphins of Jacksonville (17-15, 7-5 A-SUN) just 4-3 on Tuesday evening (April 8th).
The Eagles would have yet another game where they would strike the board in the first frame as Tate would reach second off a hit and some help from one of three Dolphin errors on the night to put himself in scoring position. Two batters later,
Sean Smith would produce a single of his own to score Tate and take the lead without looking back. The Eagles would add on another in the fourth from a
JP Herrholz single of his own with runners on the corners.
Meanwhile on the mound,
Joey White would come back from injury and deliver a masterclass start, going three full innings of scoreless work while only allowing a singular hit and striking out four Dolphins. It would make way for
Carter DeGondea to have yet another impressive outing and pick up his second win of the season. The junior would pitch for 4.2 scoreless innings, only giving up two hits and punching out five Jacksonville sluggers.Â
Although they did not know it at the time, the Eagles picked up two crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as both
Luke Odden and
Josh Tate would score on back-to-back wild pitches from the Dolphins to back it 4-0 in the middle innings. After defensive showings from both squads then on, it was quickly the Dolphins' last chance, and they made their mark.
With Smith on the mound for the Eagles, three walks in the inning would load the bases for Aidan Masters to step in. He would drill a 2-1 fastball past a diving
J.C. Peacher in left field to clear the bases and stand aboard second base. For the Eagles, they made the change to
Will Robbins. On three straight pitches, he would pick up his third save on the season and slam the door on the Dolphins.
Despite just putting up just five runs, the Eagles were able to secure the win with
JP Herrholz having the only multi-hit game for the Eagles tonight. On the night, the Eagles pitchers provided an even dozen strikeouts, their most since the opening game against Campbell in late February.Â
Up next, the Eagles finish their double midweek week with a quick road trip up to Macon to take on the Bears of Mercer. First pitch at OrthoGeorgia Park is set for 6 PM in Macon.
