
Applewhite's Double-Double Not Enough, Eagles Fall to Georgia Tech Tuesday

ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia Southern (3-2) pushed ACC foe Georgia Tech (4-1) to the wire on Tuesday evening, falling short in a 68-66 loss at McCamish Pavilion.
Alden Applewhite posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles, who led for long stretches and knocked down 12 3-pointers while forcing 22 turnovers.
Khayri Dunn added 13 points off the bench, hitting three 3-pointers, while Nakavieon White scored 10 points with six rebounds and three assists. Tyren Moore and Spudd Webb each chipped in 10 and nine points, respectively, combining for five made threes.
Georgia Southern jumped out to a 9-3 lead behind early threes from Moore and Applewhite and held the advantage for much of the first half. The Eagles led 37-36 at the break after White converted a fast-break layup and free throw in the final minute.
The Eagles extended the margin to 40-38 early in the second half on Webb's corner three, but Georgia Tech controlled the paint after halftime, outscoring the Eagles 22-4 inside. The Yellow Jackets used a late 9-0 run to pull ahead for good.
The Blue and White had a chance in the closing minute after Dunn sank two free throws to cut the deficit to 67-66 with eight seconds remaining, but Tech hit one of two at the line and the Eagles' last-second driving attempt missed. Georgia Southern shot 12-of-37 from three-point range and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, while the bench contributed 32 points.

Georgia Southern opened the scoring on Tuesday evening, as Tyren Moore and Alden Applewhite knocked down three-pointers, 6-2.

After a flurry of defensive stops, the Eagles forced Georgia Tech into a timeout and the media. Alden Applewhite led all scorers through the first nine minutes with five, 20-12.

Georgia Tech cut into the lead at the under-eight media timeout, using an 8-0 run and holding the Eagles scoreless for the last 3:19 before the break, 25-22.

At the under four media timeout, Georgia Southern regained the lead, holding the Jackets to 0-of-4 in the final 3:11 leading into the break, 30-29.

At the break, Georgia Southern led the Yellow Jackets, 37-36, with Andres Burney leading the scoring with eight. The Eagles shot 41.2 percent in the first half and were 4-for-7 from the stripe. The Eagles forced the Jackets into 10 first-half turnovers, collecting four steals.

Out of the half, both the Eagles and Yellow Jackets traded baskets before Georgia Tech took a three-point lead at the under-12-minute media timeout, 52-49.

Georgia Southern halted a 7-0 run by the Yellow Jackets at the under-eight-minute media timeout, as Spudd Webb knocked down a three and Shainen Carter cleaned up a missed shot, 61-55.

At the under-four timeout, Georgia Southern forced the 22nd Yellow Jackets turnover after cutting the lead to one, 61-60.

Redshirt senior Alden Applewhite collected the first double-double for the Eagles this season, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 boards, five on the offensive front. The Memphis, Tennessee, native added three assists and one steal to his tally.

Four Eagles scored in double-digits as Dunn (13), Applewhite (11), Nakavieon White (10), and Tyren Moore (10) all hit the mark.

Georgia Southern outscored the Yellow Jackets 32-15 off the bench and held the advantage 11-10 with points off turnovers.
