STATESBORO – Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Chris Davis has announced the signing of head men's basketball coach Charlie Henry to a four-year contract extension, which will keep him in Statesboro through 2029-30.
"I'm excited to continue building our basketball program here at Georgia Southern," Henry said. "We've made great strides, but there is still work to be done. I cannot thank President Marrero, Athletic Director Chris Davis and the Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation Board for their trust and support in my three years here. My family and I love Georgia Southern and the Statesboro community. I am blessed to be your basketball coach. HAIL SOUTHERN and GATA!"
Henry and the Eagles are coming off a historic 2025-26 campaign, a season where Georgia Southern secured its first 20-plus win campaign in seven years, a Sun Belt Conference Championship game appearance, and shattered multiple program bests along the way.
"Today is a great day for our men's basketball program as we announce the contract extension for Charlie Henry," Davis said. "Charlie has brought the stability and leadership that's essential in today's college basketball landscape. Each season has seen consistent improvements under his tutelage that have been record-setting on and off the court. His historic run in the Sun Belt Tournament that captivated all of Eagle Nation is a clear reflection of the belief, toughness and culture that he has built. Just as important, he's consistently shown the ability to manage and develop rosters each year, which speaks to his adaptability and vision. Charlie and his family are invested in this community and that's something this department values. We're excited about the direction of our program and ready to continue building under his leadership."
In his third season at the helm of Georgia Southern, Henry orchestrated a historic run of five wins in five days, joining the 2024 NC State and 2011 UConn teams as the only three programs to accomplish that feat. Throughout the tournament run, Georgia Southern set five Sun Belt Tournament records, including total points (501), field goals made (160), three-pointers made (74), rebounds (186), and assists (73). Graduate guard Tyren Moore additionally set the Sun Belt Tournament record for points scored with 120, as the Eagles produced a tournament first three All-Tournament team recipients in Moore, Alden Applewhite, and Spudd Webb.
Georgia Southern men's basketball has continued to improve each of the three seasons with Henry at the helm, adding to his win total by eight games following his first season and four games in year three. The 21 wins this past season are the most wins in program history since the 2019-20 campaign. The Eagles have set six program records in total points scored (2,994), three-pointers made in a single game (23), free throws made (654), free throw percentage (.745), three-pointers made (370), and games played (37). Additionally, the Eagles secured top-10 marks in points per game (80.9 - 6th), rebounds (1,263 - 2nd), field goals made (977 - 3rd), blocked shots (135 - 2nd), and steals (299 - 4th).
The 2025-26 squad received the program's first mid-major ranking, debuting in the polls at No. 22 following a nine-game winning streak. Under Henry, the Eagles secured the most home wins in the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center, hosted the first nationally televised game at The Hill, and secured the program's first victory in Huntington, West Virginia, to close out the regular season. In the classroom, the Eagles excelled off the courts, securing a fall semester record of 3.11 GPA.
