STATESBORO - 14 runs in the first two innings for Georgia Southern overwhelmed Marshall on Saturday, giving the Eagles a Sun Belt series victory on Saturday afternoon in just seven innings.
Marshall (13-28, 6-14 SBC) took a quick 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning with a two-out solo homer by Gio Ferraro before the Eagles bats came up to bat.
After a lead-off double by
Josh Tate that was inches away from clearing the fence and a single by
Kent Schmidt,
Sam Blancato unleashed a 384 foot homer to left center field to give Georgia Soutnern (22-21, 11-9 SBC) a 3-1 lead.
JD Kaiser and
Jarrett Brown followed the same formula with a double and single, respectively, and
Sean White launched the second Eagle homer of the inning to double the lead at 6-1.
Sean Smith reached on a Thundering Herd error and
Cade Parker knocked his eighth home run of the season to bring the lead up to 8-1 after the first frame.
The second inning saw a Kaiser RBI-single plate Blancato, a White RBI-single score Kaiser, then
T.J. McKenzie reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Brown. Schmidt cleared the bases with a double off the Blue Monster, scoring Smith, McKenzie, and Tate to balloon the lead to 14-1.
The Herd would get a run back from Ferraro's second hit of the day with an RBI-single, but White would earn his fifth RBI of the day with a single to right center field, plating Kaiser and putting the Eagles ahead 15-2.
Neither side could plate another run, but the Eagles would come away with its second run-rule victory in as many days with a 15-2 win in seven innings.
Ben Johnson earned his third victory of the season after 4.0 innings of two run ball, earning the win thanks to the staff day.
Jake Martin took his third save of the season after collecting the final nine outs for Southern. Bryce Blevins, who came into the game at third in the nation in ERA (1.54), was tagged with the loss after giving up 14 runs, nine earned, on 11 hits.
Sean White led the Eagles offensively with a 3-for-4 day, including a three-run homer and five RBI.
Kent Schmidt,
JD Kaiser, and
Jarrett Brown all ended the day with two hits.
