Eagles Breeze by No. 21 Campbell, 9-4

Eagles remain undefeated against Campbell

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern baseball earned its first Top 25 victory of the season with a 9-4 victory over the 21st-ranked Campbell Camels on Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.

Georgia Southern (4-5) threw the first punch of the contest in the bottom of the second inning, when JD Kaiser's fielder's choice scored an unearned run from Jonathan Jaime, setting the Eagles up with a 1-0 lead after two frames.

The bottom of the third inning saw the Eagles score thanks to the Campbell pitching, with bases-loaded walks from Kent Schmidt and Jaime scoring Josh Tate and Sam Blancato for the second and third runs of the contest. AJ Wenrich launched a sac fly to enter field to score Jarrett Brown and give the Eagles a 4-0 lead after three.

The top of the order would score again in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Tate would steal second then score thanks to Blancato's RBI-single, followed by Blancato stealing second then soring from Brown's RBI-single.

Campbell (6-3) mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs in that frame, but it would be the only time the Camels scored all night. Southern took back two runs in the home half of the fifth inning with a sac fly from T.J. McKenzie to score Jaime followed by a RBI-single back at the pitcher from Tate to score Wenrich, now leading 8-4.

Southern plated an extra insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Brown scored on a wild pitch to set the score at 9-4, the eventual final.

Thomas Higgins earned his first victory of the season after five innings of four run baseball, with three runs being earned. Higgins sat down three over 96 pitches. Jacob Phillips earned his first save for the Blue and White after pitching four innings of relief. Derek Vartanian earned his second loss of the season after allowing the first two runs of the game, with the Camels never able to tie or take the lead.
