Georgia Southern Baseball to Add Four to Mason Clements Wall of Fame

Names will be enshrined during the 2024 Evening With the All-Stars event
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team will induct four new members into the Mason Clements Wall of Fame on Friday, February 2, during the annual Evening with the All-Stars event. The four new inductees are Alan Balcomb, Gregg McMullen, Chris Shehan, and John Tamargo.
Alan Balcomb
Alan Balcomb leads the Eagles in several statistical categories, including the most games played in a career in program history with 251 … Also the most walks in a career in program history with 219 … Holds school record for most runs scored in a career with 248 … Ties Ben Abner, G. Botti, Steve Peruso, and Dave Pregon with the most games played in a season with 67 … Owns record for most at-bats in a career with 952 … Fifth all-time in most hits in a career with 302 … Ninth all-time in most doubles in a career with 55 … Third all-time in stolen bases in a career with 83 … Was an All-TAAC (Trans-Atlantic Athletic Conference) Eastern Division pick in 1981 … Four-year letterwinner from 1980-1983 with Georgia Southern … Played professional ball with the Gulf Coast Dodgers, Vero Beach Dodgers, and St. Petersburg Cardinals after college.
Greg McMullen
Catcher for the Eagles from 1983-1986 … A four-year letterwinner and a 1985 All-TAAC Eastern Division pick … Sixth all-time in most games played in a career with 234 … Fifth all-time in at-bats in a career with 911 … Fourth all-time in runs scored in a career with 198 … Eighth all-time in hits earned in a career with 288 … Sixth all-time in doubles hit in a career with 60 … Led the team in doubles in 1984 (16) and 1985 (20) … Currently, McMullen is the co-founder of the Simmons Strong Foundation, a foundation that honors the late-coach Jim Simmons by providing scholarships to local student-athletes along with financial support for families dealing with the hardships of cancer.

The only player in Georgia Southern baseball history to be a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, Dick Howser Award, and the Golden Spikes Award … Named a First Team All-American by the Baseball Coaches Association, NCBWA, and PING!Baseball in 2008 … All-Southern Conference First Team pick in 2008 … Drafted in the 30th round of the 2008 MLB Draft by Atlanta … Owns the school record for slugging percentage in a season with .835 … Owns school record for on-base pct in a season with .557 … Owns school record for most runs scored in a season with 84 … Went on to play for three teams in his minor league career: Danville, Rome, and Myrtle Beach.
John Tamargo
John Tamargo was the spark for a dominating Eagles offense in the 1972 and 1973 seasons … In 1972, Tamargo had the third-highest batting average on the team with a BA at .305, Tallying 50 hits with two home runs … Tamargo was the RBI leader for the Eagles in 1972, bringing 40 runs to the plate to go with his 28 own runs … Tamargo was also known for his quality at-bats, walking 33 times while only striking out 11 times that season … In 1973, the Second Team All-American and First Team All-District player led a lethal Georgia Southern offense to its first-ever NCAA College World Series appearance, becoming the first team from the state of Georgia to make it to Omaha … Tamargo held a .382 batting average at the end of the year to lead the Eagles, bashing 66 hits with six home runs, 57 RBI, and scoring 42 runs of his own … Tamargo also had 46 walks to 15 strikeouts that year … After Georgia Southern, he was selected in the sixth round of the MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals ...
