Eagles and Knights meet for the second time in as many seasons
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team will travel down to Orlando, Fla., to take on the UCF Knights out of the American Athletic Conference for the first road series of the season. First pitch for Friday's match-up at John Euliano Park is set for 6 p.m.
The Eagles and the Knights are convening for a series for the second time ever, with the first time being a series at J.I. Clements Stadium last season. The Knights took the series in Statesboro two games to one, needing the victory at Sunday's rubber match to seal the victory.
Georgia Southern comes into the game with a 5-3 record, defeating the Mercer Bears during its last time out. The Eagles pitching staff was able to keep the Bears offense quiet to the tune of only three hits, forcing three Bears errors, and coming away with the 11-0 victory to start the in-state rivalry series. UCF comes in with a 7-1 record after one-hitting the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in their previous midweek match-up, along with sweeping the Clemson Tigers last weekend.
Georgia Southern has two wins against UCF in five meetings. Prior to the 2022 season, the two met in the in the 1991 Olive Garden Classic in Kissimmee, Fla. GS and UCF met twice in the tournament, each team winning a game against each other.
The Eagles will bring out the same rotation that has appeared in the previous two series, with LHP Ty Fisher (1-0, 3.00 ERA) taking the mound on Friday, RHP Ben Johnson (2-0, 0.75 ERA) pitching on Saturday, and RHP Zachary Harris (0-2, 7.94 ERA) taking over on Sunday. UCF will lean on RHP Ruddy Gomez (1-0, 4.66 ERA) on Friday, RHP Ben Vespi (1-0, 4.50 ERA) on Saturday, and RHP Cameron Leiter (0-0, 6.00 ERA) on Sunday.
