Eagles Claim Final Series with 18-9 Win

Game three will be resumed at 10 am on Saturday morning

STATESBORO - A nine-run inning propelled the Georgia Southern baseball team past the UT-Arlington Mavericks 18-9 at J.I. Clements Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia Southern (37-17, 22-7 SBC) got started early, opening up with a Christian Avant home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles would plate another run with a Jarrett Brown RBI-single, sending Noah Ledford home.

UT-Arlington (15-37, 7-22 SBC) would tie the game with runs in the top of the second inning and top of the fifth inning, but Georgia Southern would knock two solo homers in the bottom of the fifth inning, one by Sam Blancato and one by Kyler Hultgren, to take a 4-2 lead after the end of the fifth inning.

UTA would plate one more before the Eagles scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth, their third nine-run inning in the last three games. Parker Biederer would open the scoring with a three-run homer to right center field, and Ledford would knock his second career grand slam to dead-center to take a 12-3 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Ledford knocked his second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left center, to give the Eagles a 16-5 lead.

JD Kaiser capped off the scoring for the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth inning with his first career home run on his first career at-bat at home, bringing Noah Searcy home as well to take a 18-5 lead over UTA. UTA would plate four in the top of the ninth inning to try and mount another rally, but Thomas Ross secured the final two outs to help the Eagles take the series, 18-9.

Game two of the doubleheader was started and made it to the third inning before being suspended due to weather. At the time of suspension, the Eagles lead the Mavericks, 3-1, with no outs in the bottom of the third inning. The teams will reconvene to resume the game at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 21.
