MACON, Ga. – The Georgia Southern baseball team came away from Macon with a big 8-3 win over the Mercer Bears Wednesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park. The game pushed the Eagles to an 11-6 record, while Mercer took their second loss of the season.
The action started in the bottom of the first, where a miscue by the Eagles brought in a Mercer score, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. Neither team would score again until the top of the fourth.
To begin the fourth inning,
Jesse Sherrill singled into center field, giving the Eagles their first hit on the day. Shortly after that,
Jason Swan walked to give the Eagles runners on first and second. After a
Christian Avant strikeout,
Noah Ledford sent a three-RBI home run to right field, giving the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon with a 3-1 score.
Austin Thompson homered shortly after, to not only give the Eagles a 4-1 lead, but to give Thompson his 100
th career RBI.
The Bears responded in the bottom of the fourth with a home run of their own, cutting the Eagles lead to 4-2. The inning would end without any more damage to the Eagles.
The top of the fifth went quickly, and the game was halted in the middle of the fifth from a lightning delay. The delay lasted an hour and 29 minutes, pausing the game at 7:24 p.m., and the teams resuming play at 8:53 p.m.
The bottom of the fifth saw the Bears add another run to their score, cutting the lead to only 4-3 for the Eagles. However, in the top of the sixth, the Eagles would add four more runs, with Ledford scoring on an error from a fielder's choice, Thompson and
Noah Searcy scoring from a deep two-RBI double to center field from
Jarrett Brown, and
Parker Biederer bringing in Brown for an RBI single through the right side, giving the Eagles an 8-3 lead once the top of the sixth ended.
The Eagles' pitching proceeded to shut down the Bears in the late innings of the game, with
Hayden Harris and
Jake Martin pitching in the final three frames to cap off the 8-3 win against the Mercer Bears
