STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team has released its 2023 schedule, head coach
Rodney Hennon announced on Friday. The schedule includes five teams that made it to the NCAA Regionals, including a Super Regional host, four Power 5 programs, and an exciting Sun Belt Conference slate.
"We are excited about the opportunity to compete against another challenging schedule in 2023," said Coach Hennon. "Once again, a strong non-conference slate should prepare us for conference play and provide an opportunity to build a strong resume. The new additions to the Sun Belt Conference will only strengthen what has already proven to be one of the nation's top leagues. We look forward to seeing Eagle Nation pack J.I. this spring!"
Georgia Southern will host Opening Weekend against the West Virginia Mountaineers out of the Big XII Conference, beginning on February 17. The Mountaineers went 33-22 in the 2022 campaign, including holding a 12-12 road record. WVU's season ended in the Big XII Championship against Kansas State.
The Eagles will remain home to host in-state foe Georgia Tech from the ACC on February 21. When the Yellow Jackets came to Statesboro last season, the Eagles defeated GT by a score of 10-6. Georgia Tech was the second seed in the Knoxville Regional before falling to top-ranked Tennessee. After that, on February 24, GS will host an old SoCon foe in East Tennessee State, who the Eagles own a 43-17 record over. The series was played annually from 1992 to 2005, and this will be the first match-up between the two squads since then.
Following a home game against the Mercer Bears on February 28, the Eagles will take to the road for the first time in 2023, facing off against the UCF Knights to open up the March portion of the schedule on March 3. The Knights took the series from the Eagles in Statesboro last season. Georgia Southern will then head to North Augusta, South Carolina, to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the annual neutral-site game at SRP Park on March 8. A day later, both teams will return to Statesboro to face-off at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Georgia Southern will host its final non-conference series on March 10, when the Eagles welcome in the Big Ten's Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who went 44-15 during the 2022 campaign. Rutgers advanced to the Big Ten Championship game where they fell to Michigan, 10-4.Â
The Eagles open up Sun Belt Conference play with the South Alabama Jaguars, who the Eagles swept last season in Mobile, on March 17. Following a return trip to Mercer, the Hattiesburg Super Regional host Southern Miss will host Georgia Southern for a three-game conference series on March 24.
The Eagles return home on March 31 to face the Old Dominion Monarchs before taking the road for a five-game road trip, facing Georgia Tech (April 4), Coastal Carolina (April 6-8), and Jacksonville (April 11). Georgia Southern hosts rival Appalachian State on April 14 after the road swing.
Georgia Southern ends the April conference slate with a road tip to Marshall from April 21-23, then a home series with ULM beginning on April 28.
GS starts the month of May with seven road games, starting at Troy from May 5-7, a game at College of Charleston on May 10, and a series at Georgia State from May 12-14, which is the final road series for the Eagles. Georgia Southern hosts Jacksonville on May 16, and the final series of the season sees the James Madison Dukes comes to Statesboro for the first time since the turn of the millennia from May 18-20.
The Sun Belt Championship returns to Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama, from May 23 to May 28.
