STATESBORO – Georgia Southern dropped Friday night's series opener to West Virginia, 5-1. The Eagles got a solid outing from starting pitcher
Seth Shuman, but four runs in the final three innings handed the visitors the win. The series concludes with a Saturday doubleheader between the Eagles and Mountaineers, game one is set for 1 p.m. with game two slated for a 5 p.m. start.

Seth Shuman's no-hitter bid in the third inning. Small ball moved the runner up, and a single to left plated the run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Top 7th | WVU 3 - GS 0 | A walk, three fielder's choice, a wild pitch and two Eagle errors conspired to plate a pair of runs for West Virginia in the seventh, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Bot 7th | WVU 3 - GS 1 | Georgia Southern got its first run of the game thanks to a pair of errant throws.
Mason McWhorter got a single and stole second base. After the stolen base, the throw to second went into centerfield, allowing McWhorter to wheel around to third. The throw back in from the outfield went into the dugout, allowing McWhorter to score the run.
Top 8th | WVU 5 - GS 1 | Walks to the first two batters in the eighth came back to bite the Eagles with two runs coming around to score, pushing the lead to 5-1.

Seth Shuman delivered his first quality start of the season, striking out nine over six innings. He allowed one run off four hits to fall to 0-2 on the year.

Blake Evans led the way for the Eagles at the plate with a career-best two hits in three trips to the plate.

UP NEXT
Georgia Southern and West Virginia will close the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the friendly confines. Game two is tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m. Fans who have already purchased a ticket for Sunday's game can use that ticket at either contest on Saturday. Fans will not be required to leave the ballpark between games, but fans leaving the park will need a fresh ticket for game two.
