Over 200 student-athletes attended and participated to raise $1,350 for cancer research
STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Athletics participated in the annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event on Friday evening, this year held at the Fair Grounds. Georgia Southern Athletics' "Eagles Soar for the Cure" was one of over 30 teams participating in the event.
"Eagles Soar for the Cure" raised over $1,350 for the cause, increasing their total from the previous year.
Over 200 GS student-athletes attended the event, representing every GS athletic team. The Eagles lined both sides of the track as survivors took the honorary first lap, and then the Eagles fell into formation and began making laps themselves.
Newly-elected Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Alexis Sams was impressed by the turnout by her fellow Eagles. "It's awesome to see so many student-athletes come out to this event. This is a great event and I love that it's here at the Fair Grounds, again. It just feels bigger and there looks to be a lot more people, and even more will be coming later," Sams said. "Cancer affects so many people, and this event is a great way for us to come together as a community to raise money for research and to support those who have battled or know someone who has battled cancer, those who have lost the battle, and those who are searching for a cure to end the battle."
"Now that my family has battled and survived cancer, you just look at cancer differently," said Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations Tracy Ham. "When someone in your family is in the middle of the fight, you start understanding what individuals and families are going through better. Some of these student-athletes have been affected by cancer as well, so this is a great cause for all of us to get behind and it means a lot to see so many of our student-athletes come out. We love the community of Statesboro and Eagle Nation because they support all of us and are always there to help out."
Relay for Life is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember the loved ones lost to the disease, to raise awareness to those who do not know and to "Fight Back" the awful disease. Through Relay for Life and its volunteers, the American Cancer Society helps to save 400 lives a day.
