Four upperclassmen Eagles travel to UGA
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern women's team takes their shot at the ITA Regionals this weekend, hosted by UGA, after the men's team returned from Florida last weekend. The four upperclassmen on the squad represent the Blue and White in Athens, as Mary Phillips Smith and Francisca Norregaard play in the qualifying round and Giulia Riepe and Mariana Ranzahuer compete in the main draw.
The field includes five of the ITA's Top 25 opponents and three doubles pairs. Along with the Eagles, Miami, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, Florida International, South Florida, Kennesaw State, Florida State, Georgia Tech and UGA fight for the Southeast Regional title.
WHO PLAYS WHO
Singles
-Senior Francisca Norregaard faces Florida Atlantic's Marisa Ruiz at 9 a.m. on Thursday for the qualifying rounds
- Mary Phillips Smith gets a bye the first round in the qualifying bracket and takes on the winner of the Walton (Florida Atlantic) / Robinson (Kennesaw State) matchup at 1 p.m. on Thursday
Doubles
-Giulia Riepe and Mary Phillips Smith compete against Jessica Cortes and Olga Martinez of South Florida, the No. 1 seed in the qualifying doubles draw, at 4 p.m. on Thursday
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles' last matches were at the home tourney, the Georgia Southern Invitational, which was scheduled Oct. 2-4. However, the team only gained experience the first day, as inclement weather prevented tournament play on Saturday and Sunday.
Ranzahuer, Smith and Norregaard all picked up wins against their opponents while Riepe fell to Gbaguidi of SCAD 4-6, 3-6 in the No. 1 position.
WHAT HEAD COACH MICHELE STANFORD SAID
"We are going into this tournament knowing that each and every match is going to provide some tough competition. Luckily for us, tough competition means great opportunities. These four have been playing really well this fall season, and I know that they are ready to create some great results for the Eagles this weekend."
