HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite a leadoff single from Bennett Edwards in the first, a flyout and a double play quickly ended the frame.
- ODU's first chance with the bats resulted in two hits, but an unassisted double play for Frank Wells at shortstop also cut down the inning quickly.
- In the second, Carter DeGondea started the inning with a web-gem of a play on the mound to get a ground ball out. However, he would allow a solo homer a pitch later for the Monarchs to grab their first lead of the day, 1-0.
- In the Eagle third, hits from Kaden Thompson and James McCoy and a walk from Edwards loaded the bags. However, two flyouts in a row left the bags full.
- Both squads stranded two on in each of their third innings, respectively, before three combined strikeouts in the fourth kept the scoring quiet.
- In the Eagle fifth, a walk and single from Edwards in consecutive at-bats eventually put two in scoring position with two away, but a groundout to the right side ended the scoring threat.
- For the Monarchs, two singles put runners on first and second before a two-out single from Leite through the infield scored their second run of the afternoon.
- Brady Christman extended his own hit streak in the sixth with a 107 mph rocket to centerfield, but would later be stranded at third; the Eagles seventh left stranded on the day.
- To close out the sixth, Zedalis hit his second solo homer of the day to start the frame, but DeGondea would set the next three he saw down in order to go to the seventh.
- The Eagles finally rallied before the stretch as Frank Wells and Bennett Edwards singled consecutively before McCoy tied the game on one swing with a shot to left-center, his seventh on the year.
- Two batters later, Bryson Trammell doubled down the line before a walk and infield single from Myers loaded the bags. With two away, Senese hit a dribbler in the infield that he beat out the throw to for the Eagles to take the lead, 4-3.
- The bats stayed hot for Southern in the eighth as Wells' infield single and McCoy's walk put two on with one away. White picked up a major RBI-single to the gap before Trammell plated McCoy with a sac-fly to force a pitching change from ODU.
- The Monarchs made it interesting in their eighth as consecutive singles to start the frame, followed by a walk, loaded the bags full once again. A wild pitch and sac-fly scored two to make it 6-5, before an error from the Eagles plated the tying run to make it six all.
- In the top of the ninth, the Eagles slowly made a dangerous inning as after a single from Senese, Wells walked and Gazaway was hit by a pitch with two away to load the bags. However, a strikeout gave away the inning and sent Old Dominion to the dugouts.
- Brady Pendley didn't back down as he fanned two Monarchs en route to a 1-2-3 to force extra innings.
- In the Monarch tenth, a leadoff single from Young followed by a throwing error put runners on the corners with none away before Felton's walk-off single to the gap finalized the game in the tenth, 7-6.
NOTES:
- Bennett sparked his bat back up with three hits in his first four at-bats, his second three-hit game of 2026, and now has a five-game hit streak.
- Trammell's double in the seventh was his 15th on the season, now tied for third in the Sun Belt and one behind his teammate in McCoy. He also extended his hit streak to the most by an Eagle this season at a dozen games.
- The Eagles' 16 hits were tied for the second-most for them in a game this season, tying their 16-hit outing against Tennessee Tech on March 7th.
- Carter DeGondea went six full innings, just his third of the season of throwing for five-plus innings. He went six full innings, allowing three runs, nine hits and struck out two.
- The final was just the second time this season that the Eagles went into extras, with the other as the 14-inning marathon that resulted in Marshall's 17-16 win.
