HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Mason Gazaway led off the game by being plunked by a pitch before advancing to second by James McCoy. A batter later, Jack Myers roped a line drive perfectly in the left-center gap to score Gazaway and take the early 1-0 lead.
- The Eagles doubled their lead off a solo home run from Bennett Edwards to right-center field.
- In the Dukes' second, they would get the runs back and more off of seven hits on their way to take a 6-2 lead.
- Southern kept their bats hot the following frame, scoring two off RBI-singles from both Sean White and Nico Senese to cut the deficit to just two.
- Alex Mason would come in for DeGondea to start the third and would start his appearance off with two scoreless frames, including two Ks in the Dukes' fourth.
- James Madison added another run in the fifth as a hit batter, stolen base and beating a fielder's choice throw to third saw Jack Canizzaro drive home Thompson off a sac-fly.
- In the Dukes' sixth, a Langley RBI-single pushed their lead to 8-4 before a sac-fly from Moody added a ninth run across.
- The Dukes made it three straight innings of scratching a run across as a leadoff double from Thompson found him aboard third after a sac-bunt. A pass ball to score him increased their advantage to six.
- The Eagles managed to scratch two across in the ninth to avoid a sixth straight scoreless inning by a Gazaway single and an RBI double from McCoy, as well as White's second RBI on the afternoon on a groundout.
NOTES:
- Bennett Edwards knocked his first career homer in the second inning on the afternoon, now giving eight different Eagles a homer on the year.
- A now double-digit hit streak was kept alive today as Myers upped his to ten games.
- James McCoy has now doubled in four of his last seven games, including two on the afternoon.
- Alex Mason provided good relief work on the day, giving up no hits, but just one run, in his full three innings of work. He sat three Dukes down on strikes, including two of them in the fourth inning.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles conclude their five-game road stretch with a midweek bout at Kennesaw State on Tuesday (March 17th). First pitch is set for 6 PM against the Owls.
