HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Two walks in the opening frame issued by the Tigers resulted in runners on the corners for the Eagles, but a popout would retire the side without any damage.
- A leadoff double in the second by Max Prozny, followed by two free bases issued to Brady Christman and Grant Jordan. With two away and the bases juiced, James McCoy drew a walk to give the Eagles the first run of the evening. A wild pitch on the ensuing batter doubled up Southern's runs in the inning.
- With the bases still loaded, Sean White would clear them with one swing of the bat, a beam to right center field that traveled 385 feet, extending the lead to 6-0.
- A one-out home run by former App State Mountaineer Ty Lichtenberger would make it a five-run contest in the home second, but no other Tigers would reach on.
- In the Clemson third, Carter DeGondea would pick up his third K in as many innings as he sat down Savoie to end the frame.
- The fourth started with a leadoff single by Jack Myers, who advanced on the play into scoring position after the second error of the night by the Clemson third baseman. However, he would be stranded at third to keep the score still 6-1.
- Alex Mason entered for the Eagles in the fifth, allowing just a single in the inning, and finishing the frame with his first strikeout of the night.
- In the Tigers' sixth, two routine outs on 2-2 pitches were preceded by a walk issued. However, Clemson ended their fourth straight scoreless frame with a fly ball caught by Mason Gazaway on the warning track.
- Max Prozny delivered another leadoff double in the seventh, this time to the right-center gap. Unfortunately, he would be stranded at second after three quick outs.
- In the Tigers' seventh, they threatened with two singles with one away. Craig Kalkbrenner would enter and retire the next two batters to give the momentum back on the side of Southern.
- Consecutive two-out hit batters for the Eagles put two on in the eighth for Southern, but a strikeout from Trammell ended the frame.
- In the ninth, Clemson once again put a runner on but Kalkbrenner slammed the door yet again. This time, it was a K to end the night with an Eagle win.
NOTES:
- The grand slam by Sean White was the first by an Eagle since Sam Blancato did at South Carolina on April 3rd, 2024.
- The victory over the Tigers was the first over a top-12 team since number ten Texas State in 2022, and the first over Clemson since 2016.
- Max Prozny would have a 3-4 night of his own, his first three-plus hit game of his career.
- Alex Mason and Craig Kalkbrenner, both sophomores, combined for five innings of scoreless ball on the mound. They only allowed four hits and struck out a combined three Tigers.
