STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis used a stellar singles performance to knock off Arkansas State, 4-2, on Friday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles moved to 15-3 overall and 4-2 in the Sun Belt with the victory, while Arkansas State fell to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the league. Georgia Southern wraps up the home portion of its schedule on Sunday, hosting ULM at 10 a.m. for Senior Day.
Prior to the match, Georgia Southern held a ceremony naming Court One after Hannah Daniel, who played for the Eagles from 2018-22, as a part of the women's tennis Alumni Weekend this weekend.
Arkansas State tried to play spoiler, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Georgia Southern, playing without two regulars in the singles lineup, rallied back by taking five of the six first sets. Fifth-year senior Paula Hijos got the Eagles on the board with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sarah Millard at No. 4 singles. Senior Sophie Wagemaker quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ariadna Fernandez at No. 6 singles, while Arkansas State notched at win at No. 2 singles to even the match at 2-all.
Senior Sonja Keranen put the Eagles back in front with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rebecca Brody at No. 5 singles. Senior Lindsay Tulenko then clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Yasmine Humbert at No. 1 singles, her first Sun Belt match playing at the top singles spot for the Eagles.
"I think singles is really where everything came together today," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "In doubles, once again it's the great equalizer when you have wind, and you have a team like Arkansas State that's swinging for the fences. But going into singles, down a couple of our student-athletes, our ladies knew it was the next person up. We knew we had a story we were going to write, and that's what I told the girls before singles started. We get points from both Sonja and Sophie, who have not had a chance to play singles much this year, and getting those in straight sets, I give them a ton of credit. We got tons of great energy from Paula, and then Lindsay getting that win at number one singles. Really proud of the team today, it was a good win and in front of a great crowd. I feel like it was a step in a really good direction for us."
