STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team fell 7-5 to the Old Dominion Monarchs in a Sun Belt Conference series opener Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium. The two teams will reconvene Saturday night to continue the series.
The Eagles (13-13, 4-3 SBC) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with a Noah Ledford RBI-single to left center field to score Jesse Sherrill. However, the Monarchs (21-5, 6-1 SBC) would put up four funs before the Eagles scored again, with a home run in the top of the second inning, a home run in the top of the third inning, and a RBI-single in the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jarrett Brown cranked a no-doubt homer to right center field, cutting the ODU lead in half to 4-2. However, the Monarchs responded in the top of the sixth inning with a three run homer to take a 7-2 lead on the Eagles. Georgia Southern would plate two in the bottom of the sixth inning with a Blake Evans RBI-single to score Sam Blancato and a JP Tighe RBI-single to score Luke Hatcher. To start the bottom of the eighth inning, JP Tighe knocked a lead-off homer to left field, his first of the season, to try and spark the Eagles to rally. Tighe's HR would be the final score of the game, leading to the eventual 7-5 final.
