Eagles Rally to Win Series Opener against South Alabama, 5-4

Eagles score three in the top of the ninth inning in road win

MOBILE, Ala. – The 25th-ranked Georgia Southern baseball team came back from a late deficit to defeat the South Alabama Jaguars, 5-4, to open up the series at Eddie Stanky Field Friday evening.
 
Georgia Southern (25-12, 12-4 SBC) got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning when a Christian Avant RBI-double plated Jesse Sherrill, and a Noah Ledford RBI-single brought Avant home.
 
South Alabama (22-14, 9-7 SBC) cut the Eagles' deficit in half in the bottom of the third inning when a Jaguar runner scored on an Eagle error. South Alabama would score again in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI-single, tying the game at 2-2.
 
The Jaguars would score a run in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs to take their first lead of the game at 3-2. As the top of the ninth began, Austin Thompson hit a solo home run to tie the game at 3-3. Jason Swan would give the Eagles the lead with an RBI-single through the left side scored pinch runner J.C. Peacher, taking a 4-3 advantage. Avant would give the Eagles an insurance run with another base hit through the left side.
 
USA would homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Jay Thompson would end the Jaguars' threat by getting the final batter to strikeout swinging, moving him to 4-1 on the year and giving the Eagles the series opening win.

  • Jay Thompson earned his fourth win of the season with two innings of work, striking out two.
  • Ty Fisher tied the longest outing of any Eagle pitcher this season, goign seven innings with a season-high 110 pitches.
  • Kyler Hultgren and Jason Swan led the Eagles' offense with three hits each. Christian Avant and Noah Searcy both had two hits as well.
  • Austin Thompson hit his eighth home run, tying Noah Ledford for the most on the team.
