Eagles move to 2-2 on the year with their second straight home win
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over visiting Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center, avenging a last-season loss to the Bucs.
The Eagles moved to 2-2 with their second straight win, while Charleston Southern fell to 2-2. Last year, the Bucs had collected a 4-3 win over the Eagles in Charleston. Georgia Southern wraps up its three-match homestand on Sunday with a 1 pm matchup against South Carolina State.
Charleston Southern took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Eagles did notch a win at No. 1 doubles as Dana Heimen and Nadja Meier downed Luiza Fullana and Laura Marti, 6-3.
Georgia Southern rebounded in singles to win four of six first sets in singles. The Eagles went down 2-0 after a straight-set loss at No. 4 singles, but quickly tied the score up thanks to Silvia Martinez Jimenez defeating Madalina Man, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles and Heimen defeating Fullana, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. The final three matches all went to three sets, but the Eagles prevailed in all three. Elizabeth Goines knocked off Zoe Cauthen, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, at No. 6 singles, then Meier clinched the match with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Paula Hijos finished off singles play with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Tiffany Pyritz at No. 3 singles.
"I think today was a really good day," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "It showed the continued level of resiliency that our team has been known for over the last few years. To lose the doubles point, but come back in singles, and to do it quicker than we did on Wednesday against the College of Charleston, was pivotal. We won a few more first sets today, which put scoreboard pressure on Charleston Southern."
"I want to give credit to Dana and SIlvie, for coming off the court quickly by winning both of their matches in straight sets against strong players. Then, a lot of credit to Liz, Pauli and Nadi for being able to come away with their matches in three sets. It goes to show that what we are doing with physicality and the level of work we put in off the court is turning into a higher degree of mentality where we believe in ourselves, the deeper we get into matches."
