Eagles Declaw Panthers, Advance to Semifinals on Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Steven Curry's three-run home run in the bottom of the second paced the Eagles to a 10-1 victory over the Georgia State Panthers to win Pool B and advance to the semifinals on Saturday.
 
The Eagles improved to 32-22 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 18-37 on the season. Tyler Owens worked five and 2/3 innings of two-hit baseball, allowing one run and striking out eight batters.
 
In the second, Georgia State opened up the scoring with a solo home run to left field. The Eagles responded in the second, when Steven Curry crushed his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field. Georgia Southern added three more in the third as JP Tighe reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to score Noah Ledford and Austin Thompson. Parker Biederer would single up the middle to score Tighe from second to extend the Eagles lead to 6-1.
 
In the fifth, Austin Thompson scored on a failed pickoff move to third. In the eighth, Steven Curry singled to right field to score Biederer from third. Avant tripled to left center to score Steven Curry and Noah Ledford singled up the middle to score Avant.
 
The Eagles will now play ULM on Friday evening at 7 p.m. central time for the final game of pool play. Georgia Southern has already advanced to the semifinals on Saturday, facing the winner of Appalachian State and Louisiana on Thursday at 7 p.m. central time.

  • Steven Curry hit his fourth home run of the season a three-run shot to left field on the train tracks. Curry finished the day 3-for-6 with four RBIs.
  • Tyler Owens improved to 7-2 on the season, working five and 2/3 innings of two hit baseball. He allowed one run and struck out eight batters.
  • Nick Jones pitched the final inning and 1/3, striking out one and allowing two hits.
  • Noah Ledford finished the day 3-for-4 with one RBI and added a run.
  • The Eagles collected two triples in the eighth, one from Parker Biederer and one from Christian Avant
