Eagles will play Texas Tech and Boise State in four games over three days

THE LONE STAR LONG HAUL
The Georgia Southern softball will close out the current stretch of nine games over an eight day span on a tour through the state of Texas. The Eagles opened the trip by traveling to San Marcos where they claimed a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference series victory over the Texas State Bobcats with wins of 6-1 and 5-4. The Eagles followed that up by playing against the nationally-ranked Texas A&M Aggies. Between the pair of games that made up Tuesday's doubleheader, the Eagles scored 12 runs and recorded 19 hits while hanging tough against the Aggies. TAMU ultimately claimed the first game 13-10 and the second game 3-2, but the Eagles did lead in both contests and held TAMU scoreless for most of the second game.
Georgia Southern will close out the Lone Star long haul by participating in the 2016 Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic hosted by Texas Tech in Lubbock. To start the tournament, the Eagles are scheduled to play the host Red Raiders on Thursday, Mar. 17 at 7 p.m. ET and Boise State on Friday, Mar. 18 at 6:30 p.m. ET. GS will close out its time in the tourney on Saturday, Mar. 19 by playing the Broncos again at 1:30 p.m. ET and Texas Tech at 4 p.m. ET.

SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech enters this weekend's tournament on a three-game skid and has lost five of their last six contests with the lone win in that stretch coming over UTSA to close out their own Texas Tech Invitational. The most recent three losses came on the road at nationally-ranked Texas A&M by scores of 9-5, 7-6, and 17-3 (5 Inn.).
As a team, the Red Raiders are batting .261 led by Kierra Miles' .355. Miles has started all 25 games and is tied for tops on the squad with 16 runs scored and 27 hits and leads the team with seven doubles, seven home runs, 19 runs batted in, 55 total bases and a .724 slugging percentage. Behind her, Jordan Bettiol and Kiani Ramsey are both hitting over .300, .325 for Bettiol and .319 for Ramsey. Bettiol is tied with Miles for tops on the team in runs scored and hits and leads the squad with nine stolen bases while Ramsey leads the team with two triples.
In the circle, the Red Raiders' three pitchers have combined for a 6.69 earned run average led by Mattison Maisel's 4.31 ERA. Maisel has made 21 appearances, tops of the trio, and has pitched two complete games while posting a 3-5 record and one save in 62.2 innings of work. She has also struck out a team-high 20 batters. Behind her, Cheyene Powell owns a 7.04 ERA in 19 appearances with a 4-4 record in 47.1 innings pitched. SCOUTING BOISE STATE
Boise State enters this week's tournament on a two-game winning streak after dropping six of their previous seven games. Most recently, the Broncos defeated the University of Montana and Idaho State to close out their own Springhill Suites Classic.
The Broncos are currently hitting .257 as a team through 23 games. They are led at the plate by Morgan Lamb's .341 batting average despite having appeared in only 17 games, including starting 13. Teauna Hughes is second on the squad with a .339 batting average. She has started 20 of the 22 games she has appeared in and leads the team with 10 runs scored, 20 hits, 16 RBI, 29 total bases and 116 putouts. Corey Hendrickson is third on the team with a .327 batting average in 20 games, including 17 starts and she leads the team with three home runs and a .571 slugging percentage.

Behind that duo, the Bronco's other three pitchers have combined for 12 starts, 28 appearances, 57.2 innings pitched and 23 strikeouts.

UP NEXT
The Eagles will return to the Peach State but stay on the road for one final game before opening a short homestand. On Wednesday, Mar. 23, the Eagles will travel up to Athens to take on the nationally-ranked Bulldogs of the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs and Eagles will play a single game at 6 p.m. with the game airing on the SEC Network+. It will be the fourth time the Eagles will have played on the network this season.
WEEKLY AWARD FOR WITKOWSKI
Georgia Southern softball player Lydia Witkowski was named the Sun Belt Conference Community Coffee Student-Athlete of the Week as released by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
A redshirt freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., Witkowski led Georgia Southern on offense in the Eagles' Sun Belt Conference opening series at Texas State as the Eagles went 2-1 in San Marcos. The Eagles' starting left fielder went 6-for-11 (.545) at the plate with a triple and an RBI and scored a pair of runs herself. She slugged .727 with eight total bases and finished the three games with a .545 on-base percentage.
In the field, she recorded four putouts and had an assist in the first game when she gunned down a runner tagging up at third, trying to make it home. The throw out at home from left field completed one of the Eagles' two double plays on the weekend.
In the first game of the series, Witkowksi went 4-for-4 at the plate with three singles and a triple for a 1.500 slugging percentage. She also batted in a runner and scored a pair of runs herself as the Eagles defeated Texas State 6-1. Witkowksi followed that up by going 2-for-4 at the plate in the Eagles' 5-4 win over the Bobcats in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader, sealing the series victory for the Eagles. The win also pushed the Eagles' longest winning streak of the season to eight games.
YEAR NO. 5
Georgia Southern head coach Annie Smith is in her fifth season at the helm of the Eagles. Her tenure in Statesboro has taken the Eagles to new heights with two SoCon Regular Season Championships and two SoCon Tournament Championships as well as overseeing the transition to the Sun Belt Conference in Smith's four previous seasons. During her tenure, Smith has advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice (2012 and 2013) as the Eagles have quickly made a name for themselves within the regional and national landscape.
Smith has an overall career record of 136-120. In 2014, she became the fastest coach in Georgia Southern history to reach 100 career wins when her team posted a 4-0 victory over Appalachian State on April 5.
Smith joined Georgia Southern with 16 years of experience as a collegiate assistant coach, serving at Missouri for six seasons before heading to Mississippi State for nine years, handling all aspects of the program. In 2006, Smith was promoted to associate head coach of the Bulldogs.
