STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern Eagles (21-28, 8-13 SBC) delivered one of its most dramatic wins of the 2026 season Sunday afternoon, walking off the App State Mountaineers (28-19, 7-14 SBC) 6-5 to secure a Sun Belt series victory – the Eagles' second conference series win of the year.
App State struck quickly, plating three runs in the first inning and adding two more across the third and fourth to build a 5-1 lead. Georgia Southern managed just one run through the first five frames.
The momentum flipped in the sixth.
With traffic on the bases, Emma Davis sparked the rally with a two-RBI single, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Moments later, Valerie Combs delivered the biggest swing of the game to that point – a two-run home run – tying the score at 5-5 and completely shift the energy at Eagle Field.
In the circle, Kaylee Croft stabilized things in relief before Alana Barnard (8-14) entered in the seventh and shut the door on App State, giving the Eagles a chance to win it in their final at-bat.
Georgia Southern wasted no time capitalizing.
A leadoff walk to Demere Gray set the stage, and consecutive singles from Semira Tigg and Brooke Kell loaded the bases with no outs. That brought Kayla Christensen to the plate, and she delivered a walk-off RBI single to right field to score Gray and complete the comeback.
The Eagles finished with 13 hits on the day, with Kell leading the way with three hits, while Davis and Combs each drove in two runs during the pivotal sixth inning rally.
The 6-5 victory not only capped a comeback win but also clinched the series, marking a key step forward for Georgia Southern in Sun Belt play as the SBC Tournament nears.
