Mt. Pleasant, Sc. – The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team fell 2-5 at the College of Charleston Cougars Wednesday from Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. After being denied the doubles point, the Eagles were only able to claim 2 singles victories – Anne Kurzweil and Giulia Riepe won at No. 2 and No. 4 respectively.
"College of Charleston put up a great fight today," said Head Coach Michele Stanford. "We had tight matches on almost every court, but unfortunately, we weren't able to gain those 4 points. Although we would have liked to get this win prior to conference, we must now do a good job leaving it in the past and turning our focus towards the conference tournament. We still have some great matches ahead of us."
Riepe and Jordana Klein succumbed to Brooke McAmis and Grace Baker at No. 3 doubles 2-8 and Mary Phillips Smith and Kurzweil fell to Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield 6-8. The remaining match featuring Daria Vasekina and Francisca Norregaard was unfinished a 7-4 as the doubles point was clinched by the Cougars.
Down 1-0 heading in to singles, Smith was defeated at No. 3 by Falcone 1-6, 0-6 and Vasekina was setback by Sarah Jane Jones 2-6, 3-6 to extend the Courgars lead to 3-0.
Samantha Maddox of College of Charleston got the match-winner over Klein at No. 1 by the score of 7-6, 6-2.
The match, being played to completion, continued as Riepe added a point for the Eagles when she bounced Baker 6-4, 7-6 and Kurzweil claimed victory over Schofield as she retired in the 3rd set with the match at 5-7, 7-5, 0-1.
Norregaard was defeated by Helena Nyikos at the No. 6 position 3-6, 7-5, 1-6 for a final score of 5-2 in favor of the Cougars.
The Eagles (10-7) will now turn their focus to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament to be played in New Orleans, Louisiana beginning on Thursday, April 16th.
