Eagles compete in the UTR event at the Rome Tennis Center
The Eagles got a chance to play at the facility that will host the 2027 Sun Belt Conference Championships in April, seeing singles and doubles action from Thursday through Sunday. First-year Mar Hernandez paced all Eagle performers in the event, going a perfect 5-0 in singles action, with four of the five wins coming in straight sets.
"Our goal this past weekend in Rome was to be able to play the style of tennis each of the ladies has been focused on," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "It was great to see all of the women able to compete, even if in limited action. I really enjoyed the format and location of the event. Being able to play on the same courts that the SBC tournament is held at is such a great opportunity for the team to experience the tennis center in a way that is a little less intimidating. I feel that a number of the women did a great job of being able to focus squarely on playing without fear or anxiety tied to a result. I think both of the freshman did a really good job. Both Annik and Mar did a good job of finding ways to develop their individual games, and Mar played so tough in her championship match coming back to win against a very solid opponent."
The event wrapped up a busy Fall slate for the Eagles as Georgia Southern competed in five events, including hosting the GS Fall Shootout last weekend at Wallis.
"Our fall schedule was one of the more ambitious ones we've had in years," Coach McCaffrey said. "I think we learned a great deal about where we are at and used the season as a great tool to point us in the direction we need to go in. We will go into our eight hour season now and begin to recover a bit and focus on competing for a Sun Belt Championship in the Spring."
